Camp Awards

Each year the North Carolina Division Sons of Confederate Veterans bestows several awards to achieving camps. To find out more about these awards and how your camp can enter a competition, please read below.

DISTINGUISHED CAMP AWARD: The Lt. Col. Tazewell Lee Hargrove Distinguished Camp Award is given to the camp that accumulates the most points throughout the year (Jan. 1-Dec. 31st). Points are assigned to different activities carried out by members of camps during the year. Camps wishing to compete for this award should document all of its activities throughout the year. Names of members participating along with dates and locations should be maintained and this information will be copied to an application at the end of the year. Applications are mailed to all Camps by years end and must be completed and mailed to the Division 2nd Lt. Commander by March 31st.

WEBSITE AWARD

Each year The North Carolina Division will award one of its Camps the Private Silas Matkins Website Award. Camps that have their website listed in Find Meeting->The North Carolina SCV Camps List by each March 31st, will be automatically considered. The website award is based on overall website appearance, load times, ease of navigation, interactive features, functionality, quality of graphics, website structure and organization.

NEWSLETTER AWARD: Each year the North Carolina Division gives the Col. Leonidas LaFayette Polk Newsletter Award for the best local camp newsletter. Camps wishing to compete for this award must submit ONE (1) copy of its newsletter from the previous year. (Jan 1- Dec 31) to the Division 2nd Lt. Commander by each March 31st.

The newsletters are judged on the following: Content, Layout, Pictures, and Prose.

DIVISION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM: The North Carolina Division conducts an annual scholarship essay contest for one High School Senior or a Rising College Sophomore, Junior or Senior.  Progress can only be achieved if all Camps use the program to its fullest.  Let us make our State No. 1 in State History Education.

REQUIREMENTS (for each Camp and Student):
1. All papers must be at least six (6) pages in length, double spaced. In addition to the six pages, a bibliography and reference page must be included.

2. Topics should be on some event, individual, or group connected to the State of North Carolina during the War Between the States. Each paper will be graded for correctness, content regarding the State of North Carolina, art content (if included), and knowledge of subject.

3. All submissions will be enclosed in a plastic binder or small note binder with rings. Include a cover letter stating:

a. Student’s full name.
b. Student’s Degree Granting Institution to which they attend or will be attending
c. Camp sponsoring the student.
d. A contact person in the Camp for quick response.

4. All Camps will declare their winner(s) by March 31st each year and submit their winner(s) paper to the Division Public Affairs/Education Officer not later than April 10th each year.
